Road Trip: Utah
By Maggie
“Beep! Beep!” That legendary weekend in October is not forgotten. It comes back to one in one’s dreams. The long, painful drive to Utah squished between a hyper third-grader and a logical sixth-grader, both only slightly weary is remembered. The breathtaking sight of Crater is thought back on. The tantalizing smells of Dick’s Drive-in are relived. This entire trip is reminisced on contentedly.
The long, endless drive to Utah is defined as sometimes excruciating, but mostly enjoyable (MOSTLY!). Many stops for greasy, calorie-packed, delicious fast food are made. A shortcut through Wyoming is made, the scenic view is amazing. The never-ending tensome of hours ticks away with knitting, singing, and video gaming.
The Homestead Crater at Homestead Resort in Midway is an equally important chapter of the journey to the Beehive State. Scuba divers flit in and out of a tunnel drilled in for easy access to the Crater. The water inside averages 94 degrees Farenheit, and it steams up pleasantly. The dock is shaped like a “T” and the right angles of the dock, there are benches built in to the water to form a kind of “hot tub”. The beautiful Crater is a thrilling piece of the travel to Utah.
On the side of the road, Dick’s Drive-in looms closer and closer. The amusing signs inside say:
“Look. This is NOT fast food. If you are in a “hurry”, don’t bother to order.”
“We are not Burger King. You have it our way or no way at all!!!”

A collection of Coca-Cola products from around the world adorns the walls. The French fries and burgers arrive freshly made and hot. Dick’s really is good.
The trip to Utah really is memorable. From hot springs to hot tubs, the Beehive State is an exciting place to visit. The drive-in restaurants are a one-of-a-kind experience (particularly Dick’s!). And even the long, scenic drives are bearable. The Beehive State is the place for adventurers.
